From Frazzled to Focused: Practical Stress Management for Busy Businesswomen

This morning, I had the pleasure of speaking at Ladies Who Latte — a wonderful gathering of local businesswomen — and the response to my talk on stress management reminded me just how much this topic resonates. The room was full of nodding heads, knowing smiles, and some very honest conversations afterwards. So I wanted to share the key insights here on the blog, for anyone who couldn’t make it — and for those who were, as a reminder to take these tips home with you.

Because here’s the truth: stress is part of life. As business owners, we juggle more than most. Clients, finances, marketing, operations, family, health — the list never seems to end. But unmanaged stress doesn’t just affect how we feel. It affects how we think, how we lead, and ultimately, how our businesses perform.

The good news? You don’t need a spa day or a month off to feel better. Small, consistent habits make a significant difference. Here’s where to start.

Why Stress Management Is a Business Strategy

We often think of stress management as a personal or health issue. But for businesswomen, it’s so much more than that. When we’re running on empty, we make poorer decisions, struggle to think creatively, and find it harder to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues.

Research consistently shows that chronic stress impairs cognitive function, reduces productivity, and increases the likelihood of burnout. In contrast, people who manage their stress well tend to be more focused, more resilient, and better at problem-solving under pressure.

Managing your wellbeing isn’t self-indulgent — it’s one of the smartest investments you can make in your business.

6 Practical Tips to Manage Stress — Starting Today

These are the tips I shared with the ladies this morning. They’re simple, they’re evidence-based, and most importantly — they’re realistic for busy people.

☕ 1. Try the 5-4-3-2-1 Breathing Technique.  Inhale for 5 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 3, hold for 2, and repeat for 1 minute. It activates your body’s natural relaxation response and can be done discreetly before a difficult meeting, a client call, or any high-pressure moment.

🚶 2. Move Your Body — Even Just a Little.  A 10-minute walk has been shown to reduce cortisol (the body’s primary stress hormone) and improve mood. It doesn’t have to be the gym. A stroll around the block, some gentle stretching, or even dancing around your kitchen all count.

📵 3. Set Phone Boundaries.  Avoiding your phone for the first and last 30 minutes of your day is one of the simplest habits you can adopt for better mental clarity and sleep. Your mornings and evenings are precious — protect them.

📝 4. Try Brain Dump Journaling.  When your mind is racing, grab a notebook and write down everything that’s swirling around in your head. No structure, no editing — just get it out. This simple practice can significantly reduce feelings of overwhelm and help you prioritise more clearly.

🛑  5. Learn the Power of Saying No.  Every time you say yes to something that drains you, you’re saying no to something that could energise you. Boundaries are not selfish — they are essential. Start small if it feels difficult, and remember that you don’t owe anyone an explanation.

😆  6. Invest in Laughter and Connection.  Genuine social connection and laughter have been shown to reduce stress hormones and boost our sense of well-being. That’s one of the reasons events like Ladies Who Latte matter so much — being around supportive, like-minded women is genuinely good for you.

You Cannot Pour From an Empty Cup

I want to leave you with this thought, because it’s the one I come back to again in my own life and work: you cannot pour from an empty cup. As businesswomen, we give so much of ourselves — to our clients, our teams, our families. But if we don’t take care of ourselves first, we simply cannot show up as our best for anyone else.

Stress management isn’t about eliminating stress entirely — that’s neither realistic nor necessary. It’s about building the habits, the boundaries, and the resilience to handle whatever comes your way with greater ease and clarity.
