Birthdays, Growth, and New Beginnings Reflecting on a Year of Learning and Connection

This week is my birthday week, and I'm feeling optimistic. Perhaps it's the spring weather or the daffodils finally appearing, but there's something about this time of year that invites reflection.

Birthdays have a way of making us pause and take stock. How do you feel about yours? For me, they've become less about getting older and more about recognising growth.

A Year of Unexpected Development

Looking back at the past year, I'm genuinely surprised by how much my business has evolved. New clients have come through the door, each with unique needs and challenges around workplace mental health. Every conversation reinforces why this work matters.

One of the biggest surprises? I built my own website. A year ago, if you'd told me I'd be doing that, I wouldn't have believed you. Working with The Curious Lounge and Louize wasn't just about learning technical skills - it was about discovering I'm capable of more than I thought. The other participants on the course were wonderfully supportive, creating an environment where it felt safe to try, fail, and try again. That sense of community made all the difference.

The Value of Creative Learning

I've also started a craft course at The Cowshed. I don't consider myself naturally creative, but I've realised something important: learning creative skills engages a different part of the brain. It's surprisingly mindful work - when your hands are busy creating, your mind quiets down.

Beyond the skills themselves, these courses offer something equally valuable: a connection with like-minded people. Whether it's web design or crafts, there's something special about learning alongside others who are also willing to be beginners.

Looking Ahead

So what's coming up in the next year? More learning, for one. I've enrolled in a dressmaking course at The Cowshed starting in April. (We'll see how that goes!)

More importantly, I'm continuing to grow Wellbeing Inspire. This work - creating spaces for mental health conversations in workplaces and communities across Berkshire - isn't just my business. It's what I'm genuinely passionate about. Every training session, every conversation, every person who gains confidence to support someone struggling... it all matters.

I'm also hoping to attend a mindfulness retreat. It's been a few years since my last one, and I'm feeling ready to deepen my own practice. We can't pour from an empty cup, after all.

The Connection Between Personal Growth and Professional Work

Here's what strikes me about this past year: the same principles I teach in Mental Health First Aid and mindfulness training apply to my own life. Being willing to learn. Stepping outside comfort zones. Building supportive communities. Taking time for reflection and renewal.

It's a reminder that wellbeing isn't just something we teach - it's something we practice, every day, in small and sometimes unexpected ways.

Your Turn

How do you mark your own growth? Do you take time to reflect on how far you've come, or are you always looking ahead to the next thing?

I'd love to hear from you. Drop me an email or connect on social media - I'm always interested in how others approach personal development and wellbeing.

Here's to another year of growth, learning, and meaningful conversations.
